5 Tips to Ensure Perfectly Tied Bow Ties at your Wedding

So this probably doesn’t come as a shocker, but we’re big fans of bow ties. Stephen wears one to almost every wedding we shoot. But as with a classy lady or an expensive sports car, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you could be in for disaster. But don’t panic. there are some simple things you can do to help the guys in your bridal party nail the bow ties and look fabulous!

1. Give out the bow ties early.

Wedding mornings usually run slow. People are in socialization mode and that means they’re probably thinking more about having fun together than they are about the schedule. Throwing something unfamiliar into the mix slows things down even more.

Practice makes perfect, but if they don’t have a bow tie, how can they practice tieing one? Set the guys up for success on the wedding morning by giving them the chance to come prepared.

2. Provide instructions

It may seem silly or condescending, but if you don’t give the guys instructions on how to tie their bow tie, they have the perfect out. Nip this excuse in the bud by giving them everything they need to be prepared when they show up to your wedding.

We've found that video instructions work best. Feel free to pass this video tutorial along!

3. Hold them accountable to practice.

No one likes a nag, but there’s a big difference between following up and nagging. Just put a notification on your calendar to follow up with the guys a week or so after you give them their bow ties. A quick text will work just fine.

Ask them if they had the chance to practice tieing the bow tie yet and tell them you’d love to see how great it looks on them if they’re able to send you a selfie.

4. make sure one person in the group is proficient

Is your groom wearing a bow tie? Does one of the groomsmen wear bow ties often? If just one of the guys knows what he’s doing, you can make him your official bow tie coach.

Delegate the task of helping and quality assurance to one of the guys who has experience so you don’t have to stress about what the bow ties are going to look like when the guys show up for photos.

5. Enjoy having fabulous looking groomsmen

Bow ties look great. They’re super dapper and classy but still fun and playful. It may take a little more planning, but it will be worth it when you see just how sharp your groomsmen look!

Once you've done the work to set them up for bow tie success, you can relax and enjoy the results!

An alternate plan

If you don’t have the time to prep the guys for real bow ties, you can always get pre-tied bow ties.

While you will want to be a bit more discerning about which kind you purchase as not all pre-tied bow ties are created equal, this option is an easy way to ensure that there won't be any surprises. And if you pick them well, I bet you no one will even be able to see the difference!
